We are proud to present the deployment of our bedpan washers as part of the extension of the Tivoli University Hospital in Belgium.

History

The history of the CHU Tivoli began in 1920, when Maurice André was commissioned by the Fédération des Mutualités Socialistes du Centre to build a surgical clinic in a vast house in La Hestre. The building quickly became cramped, and the need to expand became apparent. Three floors were added to the original building.

The occupancy capacity was increased to 80 beds, then 120 beds in 1935. The Belgian Monitor published the creation of the ASBL ‘Institut Médical des Mutualités Socialistes’, a name that was to last until July 1976, when it was moved to the Tivoli site, and then became the ‘Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Tivoli’.

During the war, the hospital was occupied for a few weeks and transformed into a hospital by the Germans. At the end of the war, with a total of 120 beds, 240 people were employed on the site, including 45 doctors, 70 nurses and 125 administrative staff. At that time, the doctors were salaried employees of the institute, where they practised group medicine.

In 1952, the section facing the town square was raised by three storeys to increase the number of rooms and open three new operating theatres and a new maternity ward. The institute had now reached maturity, and with its town-planning limitations, there was no room for further expansion, either in terms of surface area or height. At the end of the 1960s, a final, modest building was erected to house a new lift for a while, to relieve the pressure on the other three, which had become too obsolete.

Space was running out. The problem was solved with the construction of a new building on the Tivoli site. The impressive move took place in July 1976. In a single day, patients, equipment and staff were moved into the new premises.

Today, the CHU de Tivoli is an integral part of the Université Libre de Bruxelles network. It has 515 accredited beds, polyclinics and an outpatient dialysis unit. With more than 1,400 employees and nearly 200 doctors, Tivoli University Hospital is one of the largest employers in the Centre region. All medical specialities are represented.

A long-term vision: the Aile K project

The extension project aims to reserve the central building for inpatients, with specialised services and a care circuit adapted to each pathology. The new building will include an emergency department, an operating theatre, modern hospital wards and will incorporate nature as an element of care, adding more than 20,000 square metres to the existing 54,000.

Arcania and Tivoli University Hospital

Tivoli University Hospital has been working with ARCANIA for almost 10 years to renew its bedpan washers.

It’s a strong partnership, based on constructive exchanges with both the user and technical teams. So it was only logical that ARCANIA should be involved from the outset of the project in proposing integrated bedpan washer and furniture solutions.

Our support, responsiveness and ability to train technical teams in maintenance and users in good disinfection practices were decisive factors in our continued collaboration on this project.

The first studies were carried out in early 2021, based on the architectural plans provided. In September 2023, in conjunction with DANNEEL, the integrator, ARCANIA launched the manufacture of 11 combined bedpan washers and 7 solo bedpan washers to fully equip the new building from December 2023 to April 2024.
